Is My Qurbani Valid if a Partner Has Haram Income?

When sharing a sacrificial animal (Qurbani) among multiple partners, it is not uncommon for questions to arise regarding the validity of the sacrifice if one partner’s income is suspected to be haram. This concern often leads to confusion during the festive period of Eid-ul-Adha. Islamic scholars have provided clear guidelines to navigate this situation with piety and caution.Transparency in selecting partners is highly recommended.

According to Fatawa-e-Alamgiri, a renowned work of Hanafi jurisprudence, the intention and the source of wealth for every participant in the Qurbani are evaluated individually. It is essential that the primary objective for every participant remains an act of worship. If it is discovered that a participant‍‍`s wealth is entirely derived from haram sources, the validity of the sacrifice for all partners can be jeopardized.Ignorance of the source absolves others of blame.

If other partners are unaware that one of their co-partners has haram income, their own Qurbani is considered valid. In Islam, individuals are judged based on their outward conduct, and ordinary believers are not tasked with investigating the hidden affairs of others. As stated in Surah Al-An‍‍`am (6:164), no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another, providing comfort to those acting in good faith.Islam discourages accusing others based on mere suspicion.

Muslims are encouraged to avoid unnecessary suspicion and conjecture about their neighbors or partners. Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12) warns believers to stay away from excessive suspicion, as it can lead to sin. Consequently, accusing a co-partner of haram earnings without concrete evidence is considered a sin itself and should be avoided to maintain community harmony.Exercise caution with those clearly linked to illicit sources.

Scholars advise additional vigilance when entering into Qurbani partnerships with individuals known for engaging in activities like open drug dealing or those whose livelihoods are purely based on interest (riba). The foundation of Qurbani is Taqwa (God-consciousness). As Allah reminds us in Surah Al-Hajj (22:37), neither the meat nor the blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is the piety from you. There is no substitute for Halal earnings.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that Allah is pure and only accepts that which is pure and halal (Sahih Muslim: 1015). Therefore, every Muslim should strive to ensure that the wealth used for religious obligations is derived from lawful means. When a community unites for Qurbani, this awareness contributes to the spiritual purity of the ritual.

In conclusion, one should not harbor doubts about their fellow partners‍‍` Qurbani without definitive proof. If evidence suggests a partner relies solely on haram income, it is prudent to seek other arrangements. May Allah accept our sacrifices, grant us the ability to earn through halal means, and bless our intentions with sincerity.
