Is Trimming the Hair of a Qurbani Animal Permissible?

Many people feel a desire to keep their Qurbani animals clean and well-groomed before the day of sacrifice. However, the intent to beautify the animal can sometimes conflict with the religious guidelines that emphasize preserving the animal‍‍`s natural, unblemished state. Understanding the Islamic ruling on trimming hair or altering the animal‍‍`s physical features is essential for those preparing for Eid-ul-Adha.Unnecessary grooming is considered Makruh (disliked).

Jurists generally emphasize that keeping the sacrificial animal unblemished and intact is the preferred approach according to Shari‍‍`ah. In Fatawa-e-Shami, it is explicitly mentioned that trimming the hair or grooming the animal‍‍`s body unnecessarily is Makruh. According to Hanafi jurisprudence, if someone does perform such an act, they are advised to donate the equivalent market value of the trimmed fur to the poor as a gesture of repentance.

The animal must remain free from defects.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) issued strict warnings regarding the physical state of sacrificial animals. As recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, animals that are visibly blind, clearly sick, obviously lame, or excessively weak are deemed unsuitable for sacrifice. Scholars derive from this that any action which creates a visible defect or degrades the animal‍‍`s condition is inconsistent with the spirit of the ritual.Medical necessity is a valid exemption.

If the animal has wounds or requires grooming for medical treatment or hygiene, such actions are perfectly permissible. Islam places great value on the health and welfare of animals. Therefore, if the grooming is medically necessary, there is no sin in trimming the hair, and no charity payment is required.

What to do in case of an accidental trim?

If someone mistakenly or accidentally trims the hair of the Qurbani animal, it does not invalidate the Qurbani itself. However, to maintain the highest standard of devotion, it is recommended to donate a small sum equivalent to the value of the hair as a form of reconciliation for the oversight. This ensures that the sacrifice remains spiritually pure.Caring for the animal is an act of worship in itself.

Providing the animal with proper nourishment and shelter is a vital responsibility of the believer. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Hajj (22:37) that neither the meat nor the blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is the piety from you. The care provided to the animal should be an extension of this piety, aiming to please Allah rather than human aesthetic preferences.

In conclusion, the goal of Qurbani is to seek the pleasure of Allah through sacrifice. By maintaining caution in the grooming of the animal, believers demonstrate their respect for the sacred ritual. Let us strive to treat our sacrificial animals with compassion, ensuring they remain healthy and dignified until the final act of devotion
