The Day of Judgment: The Final Decision on Jannah and Jahannam

Belief in the Day of Judgment, known as Qiyamah, is a fundamental pillar of Islamic faith. It is the day when every soul will be held accountable for their actions during their life on Earth. According to Islamic theology, humanity’s origin began in Paradise (Jannah), and this world serves as a temporary testing ground.

Those who pass this ultimate examination will find their eternal abode in Jannah, while those who fail will face the consequences in Hell (Jahannam). The Holy Quran emphasizes the certainty of this day in Surah Al-Mu‍‍`min, stating that the Hour is coming and there is no doubt about it, yet most people remain heedless.

The approach of the Day of Judgment is signaled by several minor and major signs, many of which involve a significant decline in human morality and social stability. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned that before the end of time, tribulations (Fitna) will increase, and faith (Iman) will become scarce. Signs include the loss of empathy among people, an increase in bloodshed, and the widespread prevalence of lies.

Islamic knowledge (Ilm) will gradually disappear as scholars pass away, and ignorance will take its place. Furthermore, social vices like usury (Riba), bribery, and the severance of family ties will become common. Maintaining one’s faith during these times will be as challenging as holding a burning coal in one‍‍`s hand.

The physical reality of the Day of Judgment is described in vivid detail within the Quran. In Surah Al-Waqi‍‍`ah, Allah describes the earth shaking with a violent tremor and the mountains crumbling into scattered dust. Before this final catastrophe, the world will witness an increase in natural disasters, including floods, droughts, extreme heatwaves, and frequent earthquakes.

Economic shifts will also occur; the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned that wealth would become so abundant that finding someone eligible to receive Zakat would become difficult. However, this material wealth will coincide with intense attacks on the Islamic faith from all directions.

Beyond the minor signs, Islamic tradition outlines ten major signs that will precede the final hour. These include the emergence of the Smoke (Dukhan), the arrival of the Antichrist (Dajjal), the appearance of the Beast of the Earth (Dabbatul Ard), and the rising of the sun from the West.

Other signs include the descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus), the onslaught of Gog and Magog (Ya‍‍`juj and Ma‍‍`juj), and three massive landslides in the East, the West, and the Arabian Peninsula. While skeptics and disbelievers may deny the arrival of such a day, the Quran affirms in Surah Saba that the judgment is a promise from the Lord that will arrive unexpectedly and leave the deniers in a state of shock.

For every believer, the realization of Qiyamah should serve as a profound motivation to live a life of righteousness. The Quran urges humanity in Surah Ash-Shura to respond to their Lord before a day comes that cannot be averted.

On that day, there will be no refuge or ransom for the sinful. No soul will be able to help another, and worldly possessions or social status will hold no value. The decision of Jannah or Jahannam will be based solely on the sincerity of one’s faith and the weight of their deeds. Therefore, it is crucial for every Muslim to consider each moment of life as an opportunity to prepare for the meeting with their Creator. May Allah grant us the strength to remain steadfast on the path of Iman and righteous actions.
