Israel Intercepts Gaza Aid Flotilla Near Crete: 175 Activists Detained

The Israeli navy has intercepted a significant portion of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters near the Greek island of Crete, more than 600 miles from the Gaza coast. The interception, which occurred late Wednesday and into early Thursday morning, resulted in the detention of approximately 175 activists from more than 20 vessels. Organizers of the civilian-led mission have denounced the action as a "full-fledged act of piracy," pointing out that the raid took place nearly 1,000 kilometers away from the naval blockade it intended to challenge.

According to the GSF, Israeli naval forces used military speedboats and drones to surround the convoy. Activists reported that the commandos pointed lasers and semi-automatic assault weapons at civilians, ordering them to surrender. The Israeli forces systematically disabled the engines and jammed communication arrays on the vessels before detaining the participants and transporting them toward the Israeli port of Ashdod. The remaining boats in the flotilla, some now powerless and drifting, were reportedly left in the path of a major approaching storm, sparking urgent safety concerns from international maritime observers.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the operation, dismissing the aid mission as a "PR stunt." In an official statement, Israeli authorities claimed that an initial inspection of the seized boats revealed "materials that appear to be drugs and contraceptives." Furthermore, Israel accused the flotilla’s organizers of collaborating with the Palestinian armed group Hamas. The ministry alleged that the mission was specifically timed to sabotage the transition of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan into its second phase and to distract the international community from Hamas’s refusal to disarm.

The raid has triggered immediate and sharp diplomatic reactions across Europe. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the seizure, demanding the immediate release of 24 Italian nationals reported to be among the detainees. She emphasized the necessity of full respect for international law and the physical safety of all civilians involved. Spain also expressed its energetic condemnation, summoning the Israeli charge d‍‍`affaires in Madrid to lodge a formal protest. Meanwhile, Greek authorities clarified that the interception happened outside their territorial waters and noted that there was no prior consultation between Israeli and Greek officials.

This latest maritime confrontation comes amid a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. The Spring 2026 GSF mission, which set sail from ports in Spain, France, and Italy two weeks ago, aimed to deliver life-saving supplies to a population currently facing widespread famine. According to recent UN reports, approximately 2.1 million people in Gaza are enduring dire conditions, with thousands of children suffering from acute malnutrition. Experts have recently confirmed famine in Gaza City, making the delivery of aid via sea a critical objective for international human rights defenders.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has faced similar Israeli military actions in the past, including an interception in October 2025 that involved the detention of Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. International legal experts and the European Union have reiterated calls for Israel to respect maritime and humanitarian laws. EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni stated that the detention of civilian vessels in international waters raises serious legal questions. Despite the raid, activists remaining on the support vessels in Greek waters have expressed their determination to continue advocating for the opening of a permanent humanitarian corridor to the besieged enclave.
