Detained Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been hospitalized in an intensive care unit and remains completely unresponsive after abruptly collapsing during a highly publicized court hearing in the capital, according to reports from Reuters and Al Jazeera.
The dramatic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon inside a courtroom in Kampala, where the seventy-year-old veteran politician and four-time presidential candidate is currently standing trial for multiple treason charges. According to AP News, Besigye repeatedly shouted for the presiding judge to stop the proceedings just moments before he fell backward in the defendant`s dock. Prison guards and security personnel immediately rushed to carry him out of the courtroom, halting the legal proceedings.
Besigye was subsequently transported by ambulance to the Mulago National Referral Hospital under heavy security. On Thursday morning, his wife, Winnie Byanyima, who currently serves as the executive director of the United Nations AIDS programme, issued an urgent public statement regarding his rapidly deteriorating health. She confirmed that he is currently unconscious, unable to speak, and completely unresponsive even to direct pain stimuli.
Byanyima and other close family members have expressed deep mistrust of the government-run medical facility. Al Jazeera reported that the family is actively petitioning the judicial system to allow Besigye to be transferred to a private hospital where he can be safely examined by his personal physician. However, the court has not yet granted this urgent medical transfer request, leaving his supporters highly anxious about his survival.
The courtroom collapse happened amid a fierce dispute over legal representation. Besigye had vehemently rejected the state-appointed defense attorneys, arguing that the court had systematically dismantled his chosen legal team. Authorities had previously arrested his primary attorney, former Kampala mayor Erias Lukwago, on related charges of failing to report acts of treason, while another prominent member of his defense team was officially barred from entering the country.
The veteran opposition figure has been in state custody since November 2024. He was reportedly abducted in neighboring Kenya alongside his aide, Obeid Lutale, and forcibly repatriated to Uganda. State prosecutors allege that Besigye and his associates conspired across several European and African nations, including Switzerland and Greece, to overthrow the government of President Yoweri Museveni using armed force. His political supporters and international rights groups categorically dismiss these severe treason charges as politically motivated fabrications designed to silence domestic dissent.
Besigye, ironically a former personal physician to Museveni who later became his most persistent political challenger, has endured decades of political persecution. His continued detention highlights a widening state crackdown on political opposition, independent journalists, and civil society under Museveni`s long-standing authoritarian rule. This repressive political climate previously forced another major opposition figure, Bobi Wine, into exile in the United States following a highly disputed and violent national election.
This marks the third time Besigye has required emergency hospitalization since his current detention began, following a severe health decline during a prolonged hunger strike in February 2025. What remains unclear is whether the Ugandan judiciary will yield to mounting international pressure and grant the critically ill politician immediate access to independent and trusted medical care before his condition worsens.
