Actor-turned-politician Vijay is inching closer to forming the government in Tamil Nadu, but his path to power requires careful alliance management. The Congress party has officially offered to support his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), but with a strict caveat attached. According to a report by NDTV, Congress leaders have made it explicitly clear that their backing stands only if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or any BJP-aligned factions are kept completely out of the coalition.
This development marks a significant turning point in the southern Indian state`s political landscape. Girish Chodankar, the Congress leader in charge of Tamil Nadu, issued a statement confirming the party`s stance. He noted that both the Tamil Nadu Pradesh Congress Committee and the Congress legislative party are fully prepared to back TVK’s bid for power. The ideological line drawn by Congress, however, puts Vijay in a delicate negotiating position.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, a party or coalition needs a magic figure of 118 seats to form a government. Vijay’s newly minted TVK put up a stunning performance in the recent elections, securing 107 seats on its own. If the five Congress lawmakers join the bloc, the tally reaches 112. This leaves TVK short of a simple majority by just six seats.
To bridge this crucial gap, TVK leadership has been engaging in backchannel talks with several other regional players. NDTV reports that active discussions are ongoing with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM). Securing the support of these three parties would push the TVK-led alliance to 119 seats, safely pushing them past the halfway mark.
What complicates the scenario is a recent high-level meeting in Chennai. Sources indicate that senior TVK leaders met with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the chief of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Given that the AIADMK has historically maintained ties with the BJP, this outreach has triggered intense political speculation. Any alignment with the AIADMK could directly violate the condition set by the Congress leadership, potentially unraveling the proposed secular front.
The Congress party views this potential partnership with Vijay as a long-term strategic investment rather than a brief marriage of convenience. Their statement emphasized that the alliance with TVK is not merely a temporary fix for government formation. Congress envisions a broader collaborative framework extending to future local body elections, as well as the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha polls.
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by the traditional rivalry between the DMK and the AIADMK. Vijay’s explosive electoral debut has fundamentally disrupted this entrenched bipolar system. The Congress high command clearly sees an opportunity to piggyback on Vijay’s massive grassroots appeal to strengthen its own footprint in the state. Their strict insistence on keeping the BJP out highlights the national implications of these regional maneuvers. All eyes are now on Vijay as he navigates these complex alliance dynamics to secure his position as the state`s next chief minister.
