James Hunt Son Freddie Discusses Loss and Living Off Grid

The motorsport community marks the 50th anniversary of British racing icon James Hunt’s legendary 1976 Formula One World Championship victory. That historic title race in Japan, down to the wire against Austrian rival Niki Lauda in treacherous torrential rain, remains etched as one of the most dramatic chapters in sports history. To commemorate the milestone, the champion‍‍`s 38-year-old son, Freddie Hunt, shared deeply personal reflections regarding his father’s enduring shadow, his own childhood struggles, and his current remote lifestyle.

Freddie has stepped completely away from the fast-paced modern world to live off-grid.

Residing on a rustic smallholding on the isolated Isle of Bute in Scotland, he manages a self-sufficient farm filled with livestock, produce, and honeybees. However, carrying the legacy of a global racing superstar introduced profound emotional challenges during his formative years. When James Hunt died suddenly of a heart attack in 1993 at the age of 45, Freddie was only five years old. The sudden loss triggered severe delayed trauma months later, a psychological shock compounded when his mother, Sarah Lomax, passed away from breast cancer in 2014.

Driven to honor his father‍‍`s memory, Freddie pursued professional racing later in life and actively developed a project to compete in this year‍‍`s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, the ambitious campaign ran short of necessary corporate sponsorship following an upgrade in his official FIA driver categorization. Beyond the track, he focuses heavily on building his bespoke fashion label, Elkay Hunt, an enterprise that gained global visibility after McLaren‍‍`s F1 star Lando Norris wore one of his signature jackets at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Freddie also addresses the cinematic portrayal of his family history, remaining critical of Ron Howard’s biographical film Rush. He observed that Hollywood frequently altered core structural facts and expressed disappointment that actor Chris Hemsworth never approached the family to research the leading role. Despite the historical grievances and the quiet isolation of his remote island farm, Freddie admits he regularly watches recordings of old Grand Prix events, driven simply by a desire to hear his father‍‍`s distinctive voice once again.
