Confusion has emerged among many Muslims in Bangladesh due to the celebration of the Day of Arafah in Saudi Arabia today. Many are worried about whether they should observe the fast today, leading to unnecessary anxiety. However, according to Islamic scholars and Shariah principles, there is no need for concern. Based on local moon sightings in Bangladesh, the Day of Arafah fast should be observed on Wednesday, May 27.It is determined by local moon sightings.
Islamic Shariah dictates that every region should observe worship and festivities based on their local moon sightings. In a well-known Hadith (Sahih Muslim: 1087), Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) clarified that each region should practice according to its own sighting of the crescent moon. This guideline is the standard for the Ummah. Renowned Fiqh texts like al-Bahr al-Ra’iq and Fatawa Usmani also support this practice, affirming that following the local sighting is the correct approach.
The virtues of fasting on the Day of Arafah are immense. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "I hope that Allah will forgive the sins of the year before and the year after for the fast of the Day of Arafah" (Sahih Muslim: 1162). This day is recognized as one of the most opportune times for liberation from the Fire of Hell. If one could not fast today, there is no need for despair, as the correct opportunity arrives tomorrow.
Plan to observe the fast on Wednesday.
In addition to fasting, the Day of Arafah should be filled with prayer, Dhikr, and sincere repentance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized a specific prayer for this occasion: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa ala kulli shai’in qadir." This is one of the most virtuous days of the year, and this opportunity should be embraced with dedication.May Allah guide our hearts.
We pray that Allah keeps us steadfast on the path of correct worship and grants us the ability to attain the blessings of the Day of Arafah. Avoiding confusion and adhering to the guidelines of Shariah is the hallmark of a true believer. Amin.
