Israel fails to secure political goals in Gaza war

Three years of sustained bombardment and ground warfare across the Gaza Strip have demonstrated the clear limitations of raw military coercion in producing permanent political settlements. While Israel utilized modern conventional arsenals and broad Western diplomatic backing following October 2023, the campaign has not materialized into the strategic victories envisioned by military planners.

Destruction alone cannot substitute for political outcomes.

Documented casualties now exceed 74,000 dead and more than 180,000 wounded, alongside the comprehensive destruction of electrical grids, medical hubs, and desalination facilities. Yet the operational record reveals severe deficits regarding the government‍‍`s foundational targets: securing captive returns, eliminating armed Palestinian factions, establishing security dominance, and instituting an alternative administrative order.

Force proved largely ineffective in resolving the captive dilemma.

Of the roughly 250 individuals captured, military extraction operations successfully retrieved only eight living detainees and recovered twelve bodies. Troops mistakenly shot dead three captives, while air operations resulted in additional unconfirmed deaths within bombardment corridors. The overwhelming majority of releases occurred through negotiated diplomatic mediation with Hamas, prompting internal admissions from Israeli military negotiators that earlier political settlements would have prevented unnecessary fatalities.

Efforts to dismantle Palestinian armed factions also encountered enduring structural hurdles.

Despite targeted assassinations of leadership figures and sustained encirclement operations, organized resistance remains entrenched across localized sectors. Consequently, authorities have been compelled to pursue disarmament frameworks via indirect bargaining rather than unconditional battlefield victory. While armed forces maintain control over roughly 60 percent of the landmass, moving into remaining urban redoubts presents prohibitive casualty and diplomatic risks.

Parallel initiatives spearheaded by Washington and Tel Aviv to bypass United Nations mechanisms through an alternative Board of Peace have similarly stalled, leaving governance structures entirely absent. Systematic displacement campaigns and severe resource deprivation have failed to force mass emigration, with civilian populations choosing to remain and cross-border returnees entering from Egypt.

Reducing the enclave to ruins has merely entrenched an intractable Day After governance vacuum.
