Armed police officers in Germany shot and killed an escaped tiger after it attacked and severely injured its keeper. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon inside a privately owned facility located on the outskirts of Leipzig. Local authorities confirmed that a 72-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the confrontation inside the animal`s enclosure.
The male tiger managed to breach the perimeter immediately following the attack.
Responding officers arrived quickly at the industrial site near the town of Schkeuditz after receiving an emergency distress call at 12:50 PM local time. Law enforcement officials stated that shooting the animal was necessary to eliminate any immediate risk to the public. Local media outlets identified the site as belonging to controversial trainer Carmen Zander, who publicly refers to herself as Germany`s "Tiger Queen." The deceased animal was one of eight big cats housed at the facility, and an official investigation has been launched to determine how the breach occurred.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and animal welfare advocates.
Local community members expressed anxiety regarding the keeping conditions, noting that housing large predators in an industrial zone was highly dangerous. Animal rights organization PETA criticized the private ownership framework and called on the government to implement stricter regional regulations to protect the public. Zander’s official portal features public events where visitors pay to pet the 250-kilogram tigers, a practice that has drawn consistent criticism from animal protection groups over the years.
No other animals escaped from the private enclosure during the commotion.
Police deployed specialized surveillance drones across the perimeter to ensure the entire site remained fully secured. District Mayor Thomas Druskat urged immediate relocation of the remaining big cats, stating that the potential consequences of the tiger entering residential areas were unthinkable. Local law enforcement personnel are currently compiling a comprehensive dossier regarding the incident for further judicial review.
