A Bangladeshi woman, who had been fighting for her life following a catastrophic fire at a hotel in New Delhi, has passed away. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday (June 10) while she was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. This death marks the 23rd fatality resulting from the devastating fire that broke out on June 3. The confirmation was provided by Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police (South), Anant Mittal, in an official statement.
The victim had suffered severe burns across the majority of her body, leaving her in critical condition for nearly a week. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, her injuries proved fatal. The initial incident took place on the morning of June 3 at approximately 8:50 AM local time at the ‘Bed and Breakfast’ (B&B) hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi. The fire reportedly originated in the ‘Lemon Green’ restaurant located in the hotel`s basement before rapidly engulfing the entire five-story structure.
The inferno claimed at least 21 lives on the scene, with the vast majority of the victims being foreign nationals traveling to India for medical treatment or business. Among the previously identified victims was Nurul Amin Sohag (40), a Bangladeshi national from Comilla district. Following the death of a Nigerian citizen last Sunday, the death toll had risen to 22, and the passing of the Bangladeshi woman has now brought the total to 23.
The hotel was a common lodging for travelers from Bangladesh, Nepal, and other neighboring countries, many of whom were in Delhi for medical care. Authorities reported that the fire broke out while most guests were asleep, contributing to the high casualty rate. While local residents and authorities managed to rescue over 50 people in the immediate aftermath, many suffered from critical injuries and smoke inhalation. The incident has left the expatriate community in New Delhi in a state of deep mourning as families grapple with the loss of their loved ones.
