132 killed in 110 road accidents during 8-day Eid vacation: BRTA

At least 132 people were killed and 208 others injured in 110 road accidents across Bangladesh during the eight-day Eid-ul-Fitr vacation, according to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). The official data, collected between 28 March and 4 April, indicates that Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of casualties, with 32 deaths from 27 accidents. This also marks the region with the most accidents during the holiday period.

The Eid vacation spanned from 28 March to 5 April, and as in previous years, road crashes remained a serious concern. However, this year’s death toll is lower than that of previous Eid holidays. During the Eid-ul-Azha holiday in June last year, held from 11 to 23 June, 230 people were killed and 301 were injured in 235 accidents nationwide. The Eid-ul-Fitr holiday in April last year, from 4 to 20 April, witnessed 320 deaths and 462 injuries from 286 accidents over a 17-day period.

This year, the most accidents occurred on Eid day, 31 March, when 18 road crashes resulted in 24 deaths. The following day, 1 April, saw 19 deaths, and 2 April had 22 fatalities. One of the most tragic incidents took place on 2 April in Lohagara Upazila of Chattogram, where a collision between a microbus and a bus led to the deaths of 11 people.

After Dhaka, Chattogram Division reported the second-highest number of deaths, with 31 fatalities. Khulna followed with 23, Rajshahi with 14, Rangpur with 11, and Mymensingh with 10 deaths. Sylhet and Barishal divisions reported the lowest numbers, with five and six deaths, respectively. The BRTA continues to publish daily updates on road accidents on its official website.
